In 2008 I started The Small World Project. A project where I set out to count the number of new people I would meet over the course of one year.

In 2008 I started The Small World Project. A project where I set out to count the number of new people I would meet over the course of one year.

As things got busier, I soon stopped making notations of all the new faces I was meeting and the project fell by the wayside. I've decided to pick the project up again. I will document the number of new people I meet form 1 May 2010 - 30 April 2011.

And the count starts with the amazing young people I met yesterday at The Stoop (who, incidentally, have inspired me to create a short project about teenage love):

I apologize in advance for not remembering all the names of the students, but I will follow with their names soon.

#1 - Stooper young lady #1
#2 - Stooper young man #2 who is dating Stooper young lady #1
#3 - Stooper young man #3 who loves to sing and do dance routines from old R'n'B artists
#4 - Tevin, a Stooper who loves to dance and asked me, "you got any moves?"

Monday was a good day for meeting people. My roommate had a fundraiser in support of her new film and the room was a prime environment for my 365 day project.

#6 - James the artist
#7 - Sharif Salaam from Jersey
#8 - Wes from the Y who was kind enough to give me a ride home

Tuesday wasn't a lost for the project. I met a wonderfully friendly native New Yorker while waiting on the bus after work. We discussed how beautiful the falling snow was with the lights on 42nd Street and reminisced about growing up in the winter in both New York and Chicago.

#9 - Friendly native New Yorker at bus stop

I have a party for a friend who finally decided to quit her 9 to 5 tonight, so I'm sure I will meet new and old friends there. Come back for the update.

Thus the Small World Project is born with today's entries:

#1 - A young woman from Uganda, who is the niece of a colleague. I was lucky enough to have lunch with her today. She is brilliant and full of energy and life.

#2 - The friend of a colleague who is from Haiti.
