Popular media and the underrepresentation of girls of color

Women's Media Center president Carol Jenkins will be on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric tonight, Thursday, 4 June 2009, to discuss Disney's first African American princess, Tiana, and the underrepresentation of girls of color in popular media.

The Women's Media Center has tackled the issues of gender and racial diversity in media for kids before, in the essay "What Are Kids Entertainment Execs Doing For Girls and Racial Diversity?," written by Rachell Arteaga for their blog, Majority Post.

The New York Times has a useful summary of the already-controversial Disney production and the WMC will have more to say on this important cultural moment as we get closer to the debut of the monumental animated film.
